Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price Reaffirms Her Commitment To The First Amendment –Allows Emilie Raguso To Attend Press Conferences

Oakland – Berkeley Scanner Editor-in-Chief Emilie Raguso is welcome to attend future press conferences organized by the office of the Alameda County District Attorney. At the time of the DA’s press conference on November 29, 2023, her media credentials were under review.

During several transitions of the DAO communications staff over the summer, the DAO media list was modified and reduced to a limited number of news outlets. Miss Raguso, among others, including the Bay City News Group, was not included in the updated media list, an oversight now being corrected.

District Attorney Pamela Price has a long and distinguished career that includes defending the First Amendment (see Freitag v. Ayers, 468 F.3d 528 (9th Cir. 2006), 127 S.Ct. 1918 (2007); Davis v. Prison Health Services, U.S. District Court Case No. C 09-2629 SI), along with a proven track record of being committed to transparency, demonstrated by creating the first-ever Public Accountability Unit in the District Attorney’s Office.

Now, DA Price is taking the lead on an effort to work with renowned First Amendment and media ethics experts in developing clear and transparent media credentials and guidelines that balance the need for public safety alongside an updated understanding of how the media works today. This critical work is long overdue at the Alameda County District Attorney’s office.

Former Alameda County Prosecutor Amilcar “Butch” Ford Ordered Booked on Misdemeanor Charge

Former Alameda County Prosecutor Amilcar “Butch” Ford Ordered Booked on Misdemeanor Charge

November 16, 2023

Oakland – Alameda County Superior Court Judge James Cramer today ordered former Alameda County Prosecutor Amilcar “Butch” Ford to be booked no later than December 20th on one misdemeanor count of defending after prosecuting as a prosecutor in violation of the Business and Professions Code.

“Mr. Ford interfered in the seminal prosecution of a police officer following the shooting death of Steven Taylor at Walmart in San Leandro,” said DA Price. “Mr. Ford’s misconduct potentially makes it more challenging for this office to hold the officer accountable for his actions.”

Regarding the Court’s ruling, District Attorney Price added, “We applaud the court’s decision to treat Mr. Ford as it would any other resident and did not give him special treatment.”

The Court also vacated the jury trial and will hear new motions in the case on December 20, 2023.

Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price Announces the Sheriff’s Office will Comply with DA Request for Information Regarding the Death of Maurice Monk in Santa Rita County Jail

November 8, 2023

Oakland – Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price held a press conference to announce that the investigation into the death of Maurice Monk, who was found dead in his Santa Rita Jail cell on November 15, 2021, will be moving forward now with the cooperation of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

“Last night, Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez agreed in writing to provide my office with the information that we have been seeking by November 17, 2023,” stated District Attorney Pamela Price.”

Maurice Monk was arrested on October 11, 2021. He was accused of disorderly conduct and refusing to exit an AC Transit Bus. He was sent to Santa Rita after failing to appear on a bench warrant for another misdemeanor incident on an AC Transit bus. A month later, deputies found him unresponsive in his cell. Evidence suggests Mr. Monk may have been deceased for at least 72 hours.

Alameda County recently agreed to pay Mr. Monk’s relatives approximately $7 million dollars to settle their wrongful death case. Their civil lawsuit against Wellpath, the County’s medical provider, is still pending.

“Mr. Monk, I am told, had a mental illness – a diagnosis. He had medical issues. We all know that mental illness is not a crime, and it should not be a death sentence in Alameda County,” said District Attorney Price.

In attendance during the DA Price’s announcement were Mr. Monk’s daughter and his two sisters, members of the faith community, and concerned residents demanding a full investigation. The family and their attorney met with DA Price and her team before and after the press conference.
