DENIM DAY 2022

Denim Day is a campaign that takes place during Sexual Assault Awareness Month. We wear denim to show solidarity with survivors, raise awareness, and educate others about all forms of sexual violence.

History of Denim Day

Denim Day began after a 1992 Italian rape case when an 18-year-old girl was raped by a truck driver. Although convicted, the Italian Supreme Court overturned the conviction because the victim was wearing tight jeans, the Court concluded she had to help her rapist remove them. This became known as the “jeans alibi.”

Enraged, the women in Italian Parliament launched a protest, and the protest was picked up internationally, including by the California Legislature. Denim Day was born, and continues to this day to take a stand against sexual assault and stand in solidarity with survivors everywhere.
