Misd. Sexual Assault Charges Filed Against Varghese Alengadan

After an investigation by the Alameda Police Department, the District Attorney’s Office has filed one count of sexual battery against Varghese Alengadan, also known as Father George, a former priest at St. Joseph Basilica in the City of Alameda. The crime took place in July of 2019, and the victim is an adult.

“Father George held a position of trust, authority and power at St. Joseph Basilica in Alameda. As Pastor of the Church and the School, there existed a power imbalance over others that compounds the impact of sexual abuse. His position made his actions all the more devastating to the victim,” says DA O’Malley. “It takes courage for victims and survivors of sexually motivated crimes, especially those crimes committed by a clergy member or other person in power, to report the crimes. My Office does all it can to help those reporting sexual abuse to feel safe and supported. To all victims and survivors, I say that my office will bring perpetrators to justice while providing support and resources to enable victims to work through and overcome the trauma of the assault.”

The District Attorney’s Office will support all victims and survivors of sexual abuse and violence. We encourage you to report – your courage will bring perpetrators to justice and save others from falling victim to future assaults.

Anyone who has been victimized by or who has additional information regarding Father Alengadan is encouraged to contact the Alameda Police Department or the District Attorney’s Office at 510-272-6222.
