People v Lewis Clinton

On June 22, 2017, a jury found defendant Lewis Green Clinton Jr guilty of grand theft, money laundering, tax evasion and perjury.

Defendant Clinton was the former Chief Financial Officer of AC Transit and was, for many years, the president of certain non-profit corporations associated with the Allen Temple Baptist Church in East Oakland.

In early 2013, one of those non-profits was unable to make its payroll. An ensuing investigation revealed that between 2007 and 2013, Defendant Clinton had embezzled approximately $590,000 from those corporations. He spent the money on house loans, travel, car expenses and a variety of lifestyle items.

The trial against Defendant Clinton lasted three weeks, and the jury convicted him on all seven counts. Defendant Lewis Green Clinton Jr was remanded into custody and is scheduled to be sentenced on September 8, 2017.

The case was prosecuted by DDA Matt Beltramo, with assistance from Inspectors Robert Chan and Jim Taranto.
