People v Christopher Arthur Purcell

On June 20, 2014, a jury convicted Christopher Arthur Purcell of 22 counts of oral copulation of a person under 18 and five counts of sodomy of a person under 18. On May 25, 2013, John Doe had been exploring Craigslist when he found a listing for a “houseboy” posted by the 58 year old defendant. The posting offered room and board in exchange for cooking and cleaning. The listing also stated that, “play would be expected”.

John Doe contacted the defendant, they met in Fremont and drove to the defendant’s house in Hayward. At the house, John Doe orally copulated the defendant, and the defendant then sodomized John Doe. Afterwards, the defendant agreed that John Doe could live with him as his houseboy. John Doe and his mother moved in several days later, after answering a new, false ad created by the defendant, and almost immediately the victim and the defendant entered into a sexual relationship. On August 4, 2013, John Doe and the defendant argued over John Doe not engaging in enough sexual activity to please the defendant. John Doe’s mother overhead the argument and learned the true nature of the living arrangements for the first time. Hayward Police were contacted the following morning, and the defendant was arrested that same night. The prosecutor was DDA Chris Infante with assistance from DA Inspector Andrea Moreland.
