Alameda County DA’s Office Participates in Nationwide Event

WHAT: The public is encouraged to bring any unused, unwanted and/or expired prescription or over the counter medication for free, confidential and safe disposal

WHO: The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, is participating in National Drug Take Back Day

WHEN: Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 10:00AM – 2:00PM

Kaiser Oakland - 3801 Howe Street, Oakland, CA 94611
Alameda County Family Justice Center - 470 27th Street, Oakland, CA
Alameda Kaiser Medical Office - 2417 Central Avenue, Alameda, CA
Hayward Hall of Justice - 24405 Amador Street, Hayward, CA 94544

WHY: The public will have an opportunity to rid their homes of potentially-dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription and over-the-counter drugs, thereby helping to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft. The public is encouraged to bring medications for disposal to any of the four locations listed above.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

DA Nancy E. O’Malley states, “Locally and nationally, this event serves a vital public safety and public health need. We encourage all Alameda County citizens to look through their homes and safely dispose of unwanted, unused and expired medication. This is an important step in reducing the alarmingly high rates of prescription drug abuse and addiction in our community.”

Over the past two years, the District Attorney’s Office collected almost 350 pounds of prescription and over the counter medication in similar events. This day reinforces that safe disposal of both over-the-counter and prescription medication is vital to prevent the misuse of these substances, and to end the harmful environmental impacts of disposing of them in landfill or through our water system.
