District Attorney Pamela Price Charges Former Employee of Local Trucking Company for Embezzling Over $4.3 Million, Laundering Stolen Funds, and Committing Perjury
September 26, 2024
Oakland, CA— Today, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price announces that Darinder S. Dyal (43) has been charged with over 150 felony charges and all available sentencing enhancements in connection with a massive, nearly eight-year-long embezzlement scheme against his former employer, a local trucking company based in Union City. The charges against Mr. Dyal include 89 counts of grand theft by embezzlement, one for each month between January 2015 and May 2022, when his alleged crimes were discovered.
Mr. Dyal is alleged to have used his position of trust in control of the victim’s company finances to set up a company fuel card account that he secretly used to write and cash checks to himself on a weekly basis for nearly eight years. It is further alleged that Mr. Dyal used these stolen funds to finance a lavish lifestyle that included luxury vacations and travel, attending professional sports games, expensive retail purchases, and near-constant gambling. Mr. Dyal is also charged with 65 counts of money laundering for allegedly depositing over $900,000 of the embezzled funds as cash deposits into his personal checking accounts, allowing him to use these stolen funds in the legitimate financial system. Finally, Mr. Dyal is charged with one count of perjury for allegedly falsely claiming under oath in an unrelated court filing in December 2020 that he had $10,000 per month of net gambling winnings, an apparent attempt to disguise the alleged fact that he was funding his lavish lifestyle with stolen funds.
“We have filed charges and enhancements, including the aggravated white-collar crime enhancement and the money laundering enhancement, that are appropriate given the size of the theft and the betrayal of these vulnerable victims,” said DA Pamela Price. “My office will not let embezzlers prey on Alameda County’s small business community. I want to thank the Union City Police Department and our Office’s Consumer, Environmental Protection, and Special Prosecutions Unit’s investigation of this case, led by Deputy District Attorney Gabriel Markoff.
Mr. Dyal made his first appearance today in custody at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin after being arrested by District Attorney’s Inspectors at the Oakland airport on Tuesday.
