WHERE: 471 B 9th Street, Oakland, CA

“Gun violence plagues our communities. The Art of Peace focuses a spotlight on our ongoing efforts to end this crisis,” says DA O’Malley. “Over the past 30 years, the DA’s Office has amassed over one thousand firearms that were collected as evidence in criminal prosecutions. This project has re-imagined these instruments of violence into objects of beauty and grace.”

The DA’s Office had in its possession more than 700 of firearms that were used in crimes prosecuted in court that were due for destruction. Rather than incinerate them and emit pollution into the air, the DA’s Office engaged a licensed company to make the firearms inoperable and separate the parts. Selected artists were given any of those parts they wanted in order to create art work reflecting a message to end gun violence and create positive pathways for all.

The show displaying the art will remain open to the public in the 9th Street space for several weeks and all are encouraged to visit and view these remarkable sculptures. Dates and times of gallery operation will be posted and advertised on a week to week basis.
