Meet DA Nancy E. O'Malley

People v Robert Drawn

On October 8, 2015, a jury found Defendant Robert Drawn guilty of the first degree murder of Waleed Wheatfall (with enhancements for using a gun), attempted murder of Kennith Robinson (also with enhancements for using a gun), unlawful assault with a weapon, and two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon.

On September 17th, 2011, at approximately 4:30pm, Defendant Drawn and an unknown accomplice walked up to a young man in the parking lot of a supermarket at 57th and Foothill in Oakland. The young man, Waleed Wheatfall, extended his hand as if to offer a handshake. Instead, Defendant Drawn pulled out a semi-automatic weapon and fired multiple gunshots, killing him.

The accomplice ran across the street to grab his truck, while Defendant Drawn walked over to a car in the lot and also shot the car’s passenger, Kennith Robinson, multiple times. The accomplice returned to pick up Defendant Drawn and they fled together, leaving behind Defendant Drawn’s blue van.

The Oakland Police Department enlisted the help of the television show ‘America’s Most Wanted’ to assist them in solving this case. As a result of the show airing the story, U.S. Marshals received a tip that Defendant Drawn was hiding out in Indio, CA. He was apprehended in February 2013 and was returned to the Bay Area for trial.

Defendant Robert Drawn is scheduled to be sentenced on November 20, 2015. The case was prosecuted by DDA Butch Ford with assistance from DA Inspector Caesar Basa and Victim-Witness Advocate Maria Suniga.
