Meet DA Nancy E. O'Malley

People v Manuel Trujillo and Mohammed Khan

On October 19, 2015, Defendants Manuel Trujillo and Mohammed Zarin Kahn were convicted of first degree murder for the killing of Francisco Lopez in February 2010. The jury also returned guilty verdicts for the attempted voluntary manslaughter of Fernando Lopez.

On February 26, 2010, brothers Francisco and Fernando Lopez broke into a home in Hayward that was operating illegally as a marijuana grow. The house was being guarded by two men as well as two large pit bulls. Francisco and Fernando were immediately apprehended by the guards who held the brothers at gunpoint.

A short time later, a group of four men arrived to the house, including Defendant Kahn and Defendant Trujillo. The group stripped down the brothers, tied them up, and began to beat them. The decision was made to remove the brothers from the house and take them to another location.

Fernando Lopez managed to free himself and escape the home before he was transported, however his brother Francisco Lopez was not as lucky. Defendants Kahn and Trujillo transported him to Kahn’s house where the beating continued. When they were finished, they dumped Fernando’s body in Niles Canyon. His remains were located six months later.

Both Defendant Manuel Trujillo and Defendant Mohammed Zarin Kahn are scheduled to be sentenced on December 17, 2015. The case was prosecuted by DDA Luis Marin and Inspectors Lou Cruz and Nicole Elder. Additional assistance was provided by Victim Witness Advocate Nadia Bueno.
