Meet DA Nancy E. O'Malley

People v Leondre Paige

On November 12, 2015, Defendant Leondre Paige was found guilty as charged by a jury of first degree murder with enhancements for the 2011 killing of Daniel Bradford. His co-defendant, Dante Clifton Burch Jnr, pled guilty to murder in October 2015.

Around 3pm on June 14, 2011, Defendant Burch and his girlfriend Alexis Johns approached the victim’s brother, Carlos, at the San Leandro apartment complex where they all lived. Alexis wanted to buy marijuana from Carlos, but he told her that he did not have any to sell. Defendant Burch became upset with Carlos and they began to fight. An unknown person separated them and Defendant Burch vowed to return with his "boys."

Later the same evening, Carlos was in the rear parking lot of the apartments when he saw Defendant Burch drive up in his black Pontiac, with several of his friends in the car, including Defendant Leondre Paige. Defendant Burch exited his car and approached Carlos. Carlos and Defendant Burch argued, and it escalated into a fight. Carlos’ brother arrived on the scene and intervened, and punched Defendant Burch. Defendant Paige pulled out a gun from his waistband and shot victim Daniel Bradford four times. The victim passed away at Eden Hospital later that evening.

An officer from the Hayward Police Department was near the scene on an unrelated matter when he heard shots fired. He saw several people running through the apartments, and was told by a witness that the one of the men who fled had just boarded an AC Transit bus outside the apartments, heading northbound. An officer trailed the bus and saw Defendant Burch crouching down in the back of the bus, before getting off the bus and running down a side street. A perimeter was established and Defendant Burch was located hiding inside the Hamlet apartments. Defendant Paige hid in the apartment block where the shooting occurred and was picked up shortly after the event by an associate. He was arrested after a thorough investigation.

Defendant Paige is scheduled to be sentenced on January 29, 2016.

The case was prosecuted by DDA Butch Ford with assistance from DA Inspector Cesar Basa and Victim-Witness Advocate Nadia Bueno.
