People v Darren Andre Cleveland

On June 10, 2015, defendant Darren Andre Cleveland was found guilty of willful, deliberate, premeditated attempted murder with an enhancement for discharging a firearm and causing great bodily injury, shooting from a vehicle with an enhancement for causing great bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

The 16-year-old victim had recently been expelled from school for beating up defendant Cleveland’s 15-year-old son. Defendant Cleveland spent a number of weeks hunting down the victim, and eventually located him walking to the REACH center in San Leandro.

Defendant Cleveland confronted the victim with a baseball bat, and as the victim started to back away, defendant Cleveland struck him on his right thigh with the bat. The victim fled and was chased by defendant Cleveland in his car. From inside his car, Defendant Cleveland fired at least 7 shots at the victim, hitting the victim once in the shoulder.

On August 27, 2015, defendant Darren Andre Cleveland was sentenced to 35 years to Life in state prison for these crimes. The case was prosecuted by DDA Chris Cavagnaro and assisted by Inspector Mark Moreno and Victim-Witness Advocate Lindsay Reynolds.
