Meet DA Nancy E. O'Malley

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month

June 2015 is recognized as Elder Abuse Awareness month and the dedicated members of our Elder Abuse Unit have been working hard to increase awareness in the community of the unique challenges facing our elderly and dependent adult population.

The DA's Office has partnered with all 14 incorporated cities as well as with the Alameda County Board of Supervisors to issue proclamations in support of this good cause. Recently, members of our Elder Abuse Unit accepted the proclamation from Alameda County Supervisor Wilma Chan. The proclamation designated June as Elder Abuse Awareness month and acknowledged the DA's Office for all the work we do in serving elderly and dependent adult victims of crime.

Serving our elder and dependent adult population is important to us at the DA's Office, as this group are some of our most vulnerable citizens. The Elder Abuse Unit of the Alameda County District Attorney's Office is comprised of a tight-knit a team of prosecutors, inspectors and victim-witness advocates who combine to ensure perpetrators of elder abuse are held accountable and the victims of these crimes are served in the best manner possible. We have also established an Elder Abuse Court that operates on Fridays and allows certain concessions to the elderly and depend adult victims.

"Elder abuse encapsulates more than just physical abuse and neglect of our elder and dependent adult population. We are seeing more and more cases of elders being targeted for their financial resources by scammers and those they know," said District Attorney Nancy O'Malley.

"Our Elder Abuse Unit at the Alameda County Family Justice Center stands up for these victims, and holds the abusers of our elders accountable," DA O'Malley said.
