People v Jahmari Selvam Butler

On June 29, 2015, a jury convicted Jahmari Selvam Butler of armed carjacking, robbery, evading the police, and being in possession of a stolen car.

On July 24, 2013, at around 2am, the victim was sitting double-parked with his hazard lights on waiting for his friend near Lake Merritt. He was approached by 3 to 4 males, including Defendant Jahmari Butler. One of the suspects pointed a gun at the victim and ordered him out of the car. The victim complied and the defendant and the suspects fled in the victim's car.

Approximately 13 hours later, Defendant Butler was spotted by CHP driving the victim’s car. When the officer activated his lights and sirens, the Defendant Butler led the officer on a pursuit through busy Oakland city streets, driving into oncoming traffic, running red lights, and speeding. Eventually, defendant Butler stopped and fled on foot. He was detained by responding Oakland Police officers.

OPD conducted a search of Defendant Butler’s house and found some of the victim’s possessions and during the interview, they also obtained some crucial admissions from Defendant Butler.

The case was prosecuted by DDA Lauren Hashimoto with assistance from DA Inspector James Rullamas.
