Protecting seniors from scams and fraud

On November 30th, KALW, local public radio in San Francisco, hosted a panel discussion about scams aimed at seniors. Assistant District Attorney Cheryl Poncini, an elder abuse specialist from our office, was a guest speaker and addressed a number of issues facing seniors.

Some scams and frauds targeting seniors:

  • IRS telephone fraud - calling and claiming that you owe money
  • Medicare open enrollment - asking you to verify personal information
  • Fraudulent charities
  • The "grandchild" scam, a stranger pretending to be a grandchild in trouble
  • Fraudulent utility workers (cable, power, etc.) attempting to gain access to your home
  • Prescription drug scams
  • Medical "up-selling"
  • Home repair fraud and "up-selling"
