People v Dominic Daniel

On April 29, 2015, a jury found defendant Dominic Daniel guilty of the second degree murder of 33-year-old Tsega Tsegay.

In the early morning hours of July 31, 2012, defendant Dominic Daniel and his girlfriend of four years, victim Tsega Tsegay, were drinking alcohol by Lake Merritt. Defendant Daniel had a history of domestic violence against the victim and had just recently been released from custody for a prior assault against her.

At 5:30am, a pedestrian summoned a passing jogger to call 911 after seeing a woman lying semi-naked and unconscious on the grassy area next to the Lake Chalet Restaurant. The jogger saw defendant Daniel standing next to the victim. He was holding the victim's head, and asking "my wife, is she dead?". The victim was transported to hospital where she died of her injuries a few hours later.

After performing an autopsy on the victim’s body, the pathologist testified that a significant amount of force was necessary to create all of the injuries the victim sustained. Evidence, physical injuries sustained by defendant Daniel and his statements to police corroborated the prosecutor's assertion that defendant Daniel beat his girlfriend to death.

Defendant Daniel will be sentenced on June 29, 2015. The case was prosecuted by DDA Laura Passaglia with assistance from Inspector Andrea Moreland and Victim-Witness Consultant Kelli Sage.
