People v Yonas Alehegne

On November 19, 2014, a jury convicted Yonas Alehegne of stalking and criminal threats.

On August 17, 2014, the victim, an aide at a homeless shelter, was cleaning the bathroom in the men’s respite unit. The defendant followed her in and when she told him to leave, he closed and locked the door and began undoing his pants, telling the victim, “shut up, bitch, you’re not going anywhere.” The victim began to yell for help and another resident pulled the defendant out of the bathroom. When the defendant was escorted out of the shelter, he told the victim that he would “get her.” About an hour and a half later, when the victim boarded a BART car, she turned to see the defendant behind her. As she made her way to the front of the train, the defendant followed her through several cars, laughing at her obvious distress.

The case was prosecuted by DDA Angela Steffes.
