Milpitas Bollywood Concert Promoter Found Guilty of Aggravated Mayhem and Conspiracy

Oakland, CA. -- Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley announced today that on May 6, 2014, a jury found local Bollywood Concert Promoter Rakesh "Paul" Singh, 55, of Milpitas, CA guilty of aggravated mayhem and conspiracy to commit aggravated mayhem.

This case comes out of a vicious attack that took place in Fremont, CA on February 11, 2013. On that date, the Defendant's ex-wife was leaving her Fremont home at 9:00 a.m. when two men brutally assaulted her with both hammer and knife. As a result of the beating and slashing, the victim sustained multiple deep lacerations to her cheek, nose, and ear and had to undergo extensive and ongoing medical treatment.

After an lengthy investigation led by Fremont Police Detective Armando Magana it was discovered that the defendant had paid $500.00 to three co-conspirators to carry out the attack. Prior to trial, the two attackers, Morris Kurtz and Donald Harbaugh, as well as Ricardo Rivera, the man who coordinated the attack, pled guilty to mayhem. It is expected that Rivera will be sentenced to eight years in prison, Harbaugh to thirteen years and Kurtz to nine years for their roles in the crimes.

Trial testimony revealed that the Defendant Singh wanted the victim's face disfigured because he believed she was seeing another man and he insisted that the attack look like a robbery. Additionally, witnesses in the trial testified that the defendant had orchestrated similar attacks on former business partners in the past in other jurisdictions.

Defendant Singh faces a prison term of seven years to life when he is sentenced on June 2, 2014. The case was prosecuted by DDA Charles Wilson with the assistance of DA Inspector Paul Balzouman.
