DA's Office to Participate in Prescription Drug Take Back Day

OAKLAND -- The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, in partnership with the US Drug Enforcement Administration, is participating in the second Prescription Drug Take Back initiative of the year on Saturday, September 29. Alameda County residents are encouraged to bring their unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medication to the Alameda County Family Justice Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for safe disposal.

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.

The Alameda County DA’s Office is committed combating the serious issue of prescription drug abuse in our community. District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley states, “Prescription drug abuse is a significant public safety and public health concern. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Safe disposal of both prescription and over-the-counter medication is essential to prevent the misuse of these substances, as well as to end the adverse environmental impacts of disposing of them in landfill or via our water system.”

In May of 2012, the DA’s Office held a similar event, and collected over 256 lbs of prescription and over-the-counter pills. The Drug Take Back Day is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous event, or for those who have subsequently accumulated unwanted medication, to safely dispose of the drugs.
