Meet DA Nancy E. O'Malley

Charges Filed in Gang Related Murder of 23 Month Old Boy and Attempted Murder of Six

Oakland, CA -- Alameda County District Attorney Nancy E. O’Malley announced today that her Office has filed a criminal complaint in the adult division of the Alameda County Superior Court against Frederick Charles Coleman, age 16. The complaint alleges one count of murder and six counts of attempted murder. Each count alleges several enhancements including that Defendant Coleman personally used a firearm in the commission of the crimes and that those victims who survived the shooting suffered great bodily injury. Each count also contains an enhancement against Defendant Coleman alleging that the murder and the attempted murders were committed for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with a criminal street gang.

These charges are based upon the crimes Defendant Coleman committed and/or in which he participated on November 28, 2011, when he and his adult co-perpetrators shot at a group of people, killing 23-month-old Hiram Lawrence Jr and injuring several other people. Two teenage boys as well as four adults sustained gunshot injuries.

The criminal prosecution is the result the collaborative law enforcment work of the Oakland Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The joint effort of Federal and local law enforcement brought this investigation to a close by solving the crime and making arrests.

“These crimes are a tragic example of the reckless violence that is plaguing the city of Oakland,” says District Attorney O’Malley. “The brazen shooting of a group of individuals that resulted in the murder of a baby boy is a tragedy for his family. The toll of this brutality is enormous, not only on the victims and their families, but on those living in and visiting Oakland. My Office will continue to work with our local and Federal partners to ensure that those who perpetrate these acts of carnage in our community are arrested, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Defendant Coleman will be arraigned in Department 112 of the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland at 2 pm on Friday, July 20, 2012.
