Charges Filed in Walgreen's Attempted Robbery

Charges were filed today against Alex Nero, also known as Alphonso Mitchell, stemming from a January 20, 2010 attempted robbery and kidnapping for robbery inside the Walgreen’s at 51st and Telegraph in Oakland. Nero and his accomplice entered the store at 2:00 am, both wearing masks. Armed with a gun, the accomplice demanded an employee open the safe. When he could not open it, they forced the employees into a back room and shut the door. Both CHP and OPD arrived at the scene. The accomplice ran out through a back door, confronted police with a firearm and was subsequently shot and killed. Nero was arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with 4 counts of P.C. 209(b)(1), kidnapping to commit another crime, 4 counts of attempted 211, robbery, along with the allegation that in the commission of each offence, a principal was armed with a firearm, pursuant to P.C. section 12022(a)(1). Four prior convictions are alleged.

Nero was arraigned in Alameda County Superior Court on January 22, 2010. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 25, 2010 at 9:00 am in Dept. 112 of the Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse.
