Tom Orloff began his career in the District Attorney's Office in 1970 after graduating from Boalt Hall. During the next 24 years, he served in a variety of positions, including Felony Trial Team
Leader, Master Calendar Deputy, Branch Office Supervisor, Major Homicide Supervisor, and head of the Special Operations Division. Still, the work he found most satisfying was trying cases: During his career, he tried over 100 felonies, including approximately 25 murder cases. In 1989, Tom was appointed Chief Assistant DA by District Attorney John J. "Jack" Meehan. When Jack Meehan retired in 1994, Tom ran unopposed for District Attorney. He also ran unopposed in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
As District Attorney of Alameda County, Tom Orloff established several specialized units for prosecuting such crimes as domestic violence, stalking, real estate fraud, elder abuse, insurance fraud and gang violence. He also strengthened the Welfare Fraud, Sexual Assault, Consumer Fraud, and Family Support Departments. In addition, he was elected President of the California District Attorneys Association, and served as a Director of the National District Attorneys Association and the One Hundred Club, which provides financial support to the survivors of Alameda County peace officers and fire fighters who are killed in the line of duty. Tom was also appointed to the California Council on Criminal Justice and serves as Chair of the Ethics Committee of the California District Attorneys Association.
Born and raised in Pleasanton, Tom Orloff is a third generation resident of Alameda County. His grandfather served as mayor of Pleasanton and foreman of the Alameda County Grand Jury during the tenure of DA Earl Warren. Mr. Orloff's father served on the local school board and as vice mayor of Pleasanton. Tom and his wife Pamela live in Oakland. They have two children, Christopher and Catherine.
