Technological advances have created new challenges for law enforcement, as criminals seek to exploit various types of technology to facilitate their criminal activity. In response, our High-Technology Crimes Unit was created to focus on prosecuting cases in this unique area.
The High-Technology Crimes Unit consists of specially trained prosecutors focused on prosecuting crimes facilitated through the use of technology, such as identity theft, intellectual property theft, computer hacking, internet auction fraud and a wide variety of computer crimes. Additionally, the Unit provides training to law enforcement and prosecutors throughout the country on various topics, such as identity theft, intellectual property theft, electronic search warrants, e-discovery and admissibility of digital evidence.
As a member of the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team (REACT) and Identity Theft Strike Force, the unit works extensively with various local, state and federal agencies to combat High-Technology crimes. We are also proud to partner with the Alameda County Identity Theft Council to provide local education and support to victims of identity theft in our community. The Council is a collaborative network of local law enforcement, financial institutions, local businesses, financial advisors, and schools who have joined together to make our communities safer and provide victims access to financial counseling and other services.
Over the last decade, the number of cases of identity theft has increased dramatically, significantly impacting the residents of Alameda County. In most instances, technology is used to facilitate the crime. In response to this, our High-Technology Crimes Unit has made a concerted effort to vigorously prosecute cases involving ID theft and to educate the community on the various ways to prevent becoming a victim of this crime.
